REASERCH BEFORE YOU GO
THIS MAY BE THE HOTEL FOR YOU, BUT RESEARCH IT FIRST TO MAKE SURE. IT IS INEXPENSIVE BUT ITS NOT NEAR THE BEACH, THE STAFF DIDNT CARE IF WE WERENT HAPPY AND DID NOTHING TO TRY TO IMPROVE THIS FOR US. THE BALCONY OF THE ROOM WE WERE GIVEN WAS NEXT TO THE RESTAURANT BATHROOM AND IT MADE THE ROOM SMELL AWFUL. WE COMPLAINED AND WERE OFFERED AN UPGRADE BUT HAD TO PAY FOR THE UPGRADE. THE HOTEL IS IN THE CITY - NOT NEAR THE BEACH. IT IS ABOUT 3/4 MILE WALK TO THE BEACH AND WHEN YOU GET THERE THE PART OF THE BEACH THAT IS THE "BEACH RESORT" FOR EL TUKAN IS ERODED WITH SAND BAGS SPRINKLERED ALL OVER, THERE IS A LOT OF CORAL AND ONLY A SMALL AREA FOR SWIMMING AFTER YOU JUMP OVER THE SAND BAGS AND CORAL/ROCKS. THE BEACH STAFF KNOWS WHAT BRACELETS GO WITH TUKAN AND THEY IGNORE YOU. IF YOU HAVE THE TUKAN BRACELET YOU'RE TREATED SECOND RATE. ALSO IF YOU CHOOSE THE 'ALL INCLUSIVE" STANDARD PKG YOU GET 1 BUFFET (CIERBA IS THE NAME) IT IS ACROSS THE ST AND YOU CAN ONLY GO THERE FOR ALL YOUR MEALS, AND THE FOOD IS HORRID. THE DRINKS HAVE NO ALCOHOL AND IF YOU ORDER A BEER ITS SERVED IN A TINY PLASTIC CUP THAT IS LIKE 1 SIP. YOU CAN GET MORE OPTIONS FOR DINING BUT YOU PAY A LOT FOR THAT UPGRADE WHICH WE DID TO MAKE THE TRIP BETTER. THE ROOM WAS LIKE A HOSPITAL ROOM VERY COLD AND TILED, THEY WERE ADDING ROOMS TO ANOTHER SIDE OF THE HOTEL AND THIS IS WHERE WE STAYED, THERE WAS ONGOING CONSTRUCTION AND ONE DAY THEY DELIVERED A BUNCH OLD OLD DIRTY MATRESSES THAT JUST SAT OUTSIDE IN THE COURTYARD FOR THE WHOLE DAY. THIS IS PRIME SUSPECT FOR BEDBUGS. IT WASNT THE RIGHT FIT FOR US. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND.
I thought the buffet was fairly good it never had repeats and was fresh.
The room was across and up the street from the main part of the hotel.
The room was moldy the shower was moldy no phone or alarm clock in room . As I made arrangements for pick up for my journey home I also stopped by front desk to get a wake up being I was leaving at 4;20 A.M.
I never received wake up. Pool is small and looks to be moldy around the edges. It is in a great location for all the shops and resturants. Within walking distance to the beach.
i took my mom for her birthday and was embarrassed when the airport transportation dropped me off there. the hotel is so shady and seedy it looks like a cheap motel. the room they took me too looked as if it were in a basement. i started to cry when i saw this!!!!!!! the reception area spoke little to no English at all. finally the bellboy tells me i can upgrade for 80.00 usd to the real playa del carmen if i want too i immediately said yes and gave my credit card. i arrived at the real and its not the best however its 10 times better than the el tukan which in my opinion should be removed from CheapCaribbean.com. the food was not the best, lots of mosquito, and the refrigerator in my room did not work, the bartenders were also drunk.
It was a nice place to stay for the price. Great location lots of shopping and close to the beach. Wish there was blow dryer and phones in the room. Overall nice place to stay. Staff very friendly and helpful. Be sure to upgrade to premium all inclusive, much better dining options :-)

What's the best Resort for a Family Reunion?2 answers
We are trying to plan a Family Reunion for Aug/2011 and would like for everyone to be able to make their own arraingments online from their own home state. Any suggestions??

Unfortunately, there is not a specific resort geared towards Family Reunions. Looking at what amenities each resort has to offer for all age groups can be helpful to narrow down your search.

Wouldn't pick this hotel unless you get a great deal...not new or luxurious. Had problems with no water pressure in the shower, and beach towels or pure water not always available.

It may cost a little more but I would strongly suggest you go with one of the Royal Resorts in Cancun's Hotel Zone (Royal Mayan, Caribbean, Ilander, Sands). All 5 star. I have time shares at the Royal Mayan and the Royal Sands and have been going there for 25 years. I just had a horrible experience in Playa. Don't go there if you want this to be a good experience for all. All can make arrangements at www.royalresorts.com. Thomas Moore is there travel arm. They will put a package together and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Are there any meals? Yes, everything and anything from hot dogs, to hamburgers. Spaghetti to roast beef. Eat all the jerk chicken to your heart is content. Be sure to get up in the morning and get in line for the "anyway you like em" omelet. Breakfast, lunch and dinner had everything you could possibly want. Great for kids to adults. Salads, fruits, meats, vegetables and desserts. Yum :)
