This resort is absolutely beautiful and very very clean. The staff is wonderful, very helpful and pleasant. Our room was clean and very nice. The food was great. The only time I was a little aggravated was eating out a couple times, the service was a little slow, but we had no where to go and were in no hurry so it wasnt really a big deal. This isnt a wild party kind of place, which I liked very much. They had some night entertainment but for the most part we were early risers and enjoyed the day at the pool and beach. Some times there would be wedding parties that dominated the pools or the restaurant, but not enough to upset me. I didnt mind the sandbags on the beach that much and we did swim in the ocean quite a bit. But it does take away from the view a little bit. Overall, a wonderful vacation and I highly recommend to anyone.

My husband and I went to El Dorado Royale for a friend's wedding, and stayed there for four nights.
We have been to similar type resorts (adults only, all inclusive), and have been much more impressed elsewhere. There was nothing all that bad about this resort, but for the price we paid and comparing it to the other places we've been, we were underwhelmed.
The one thing that I thought really stood out as a positive here was the helpfulness and friendliness of most of the staff. Although there were a couple of exceptions (both from bar staff/servers being upset that we didn't tip on some of our drinks), the rest of the staff was great. Keep in mind that all gratuities are supposed to be included, so we didn't bring lots of extra cash for tips.
As far as the food goes, most things were just OK. There were a couple of things that were pretty good (the cream cheese french toast at breakfast at the Asian restaurant), but for the most part everything was just mediocre at best. We also liked the dinner at the Italian restaurant below the reception area, but were very disappointed with the dinner at the Cocochal (sp?) restaurant.
The rooms were nice, cool, and clean, but again, compared to the other places we've been with similar concepts, they were lacking. An example of the great service we had in regards to the room though was that when we had a problem with the EXTREMELY hard bed (I am not a picky mattress person, but the first night we slept on that bed was like sleeping on the floor) the staff was happy to try to find us another nearby room to switch to if we wanted (it also had a rock hard bed!). When we told them that we would just stay in our room, they offered to bring something to "make the bed softer" while we were out at dinner, and essentially put on an egg crate or something that made the bed so much more comfortable. The staff was very quick to respond to our request, and their help was definitely appreciated!
Lastly, the pools and ocean were pretty disappointing. The ocean view is really not great with all of the sand bags in it, and the bags also didn't allow for the water to circulate enough, so the water got very warm. I understand what the resort is trying to do (attempting to prevent beach erosion), so I tried not to let it affect my opinion of the resort, but if you are looking for a great ocean view, this is not the place to go. The pools were very disappointing, especially without a cool, refreshing beach to go to. If the ocean was warm, the pools were downright hot, and the only reason to get in them was to get under the little bit of shade provided at the bar.

Wine selection of El Dorado Royale3 answers
Other website reviewers comment that the house wine selection is terrible - even though the food is gourmet. To get decent wine, they "upsell" you and you have to pay terribly inflated prices. Any thoughts?
We are trying to decide between El Dorado Royale and one of the Palace resorts (with their $1500 credits). It is just my husband and I - and we are looking for clean rooms/resort (perhaps adult only), good food and wine selection, great pools/beach - really enjoy snorkeling.
We stayed Moon Palace years ago.
Any recommendations or recent visit comments would be greatly appreciated.

The El Dorado Royale does offer a seletcion of wines that are included in the all-inclusive package. There is also an "Exquisite wine list" that is not included in the all-inclusive, and would be an additional cost. The pricing would be based upon your individual wine selections.

My husband and I stayed at the El Dorado Royale for our honeymoon October 2008 and it was amazing! We aren't big wine drinkers however we did order a bottle one night and it was good but pretty expensive-but with the resort being all-inclusive we didn't really mind paying for one thing! We snorkeled just around the beach area and there were a lot of colorful fish! Alot of the reviews we had read before we went warned about the sand bags in the water and that they were ugly-but we didn't think one thing about them being there, it actually helped with the water being calm and also housed a bunch of different fish! Our room was amazing with a huge private jet bath and the bed was very comfortable. The food was excellent everywhere-even the pizza at the little outside restaurant by the pool was amazing! The room service was also great! If you get up early enough you can save a beach chair under one of the covered areas (if you want shade) becuase the beach was a little busy but it was very beautiful. We also took a tour to the ruins and it was pretty neat- also to the natural waterpark where we got to snorkel and inner-tube and swim to some caves that you can snorkel in! I highly recommend the El Dorado Royale- it was amazing! hope this helps!!

It is true that the wines have incredibly inflated prices. The first night we spent $44 for a bottle of pretty awful Mexican wine. We didn't make that mistake again.
I would not recommend El Dorado if you want a great beach. The beach was pretty disappointing. Very rocky and lots of sandbags.

Even though we didn't have any wine, we did see an enormous wine rack in the Italian style restaurant, those around us having wine seem to be enjoying their selections. I kinda do wish I was more of a wine knowledgeable person, but only have drank the sweeter, white wines. I am not much on the Merlots, etc. red wines.

Nast Traveler Readers' "Top 100 Hotels in the World," this adults-only retreat offers a gourmet all inclusive plan that pampers your palate while you swim in AAA Four Diamond luxury.
Stroll hand in hand with your sweetheart along the resort's secluded sands or get the wedding party together for a swim in the resort's natural, saltwater pool. Looking to achieve the perfect bronze for your wedding? Surrender to the sizzling Mexican sun on a lounger or slide into one of the resort's 12 freshwater pools and make your way to a swim-up bar for a cocktail... and since there are 10 in-pool bars, chances are you won't have to float very far.
Seven gourmet restaurants tempt your taste buds with selections like the lobster lasagna from five-star D'Italia, fondue with a view from La Fondue and the Pacific Rim cuisine of Kampai. For a unique show with your meal, head to Fuentes-Culinary Theatre, where flat-screens give guests an inside view of the work of Michelin-trained chefs. When twilight beckons, grab your honeymoon-heartthrob and nestle into a swinging chair with a drink for live music at Las Guacamayas, or sip premium martinis at the stylish Martini Bar. If you're looking for more, there's always a 20-minute cab ride to the heart of Cancun's nightlife.
Before tying the knot at the resort's stunning, beachfront wedding chapel, do away with any pre-vow jitters with a body scrub and a beachfront sky massage in a palapa overlooking the Caribbean. While you're there, take a lesson from the pros, who'll teach you how to give your spouse-to-be a massage when you get back to your Infinity Pool Swim-up Casita Suite. The suite has a private plunge pool that leads to the lazy river, a jetted tub and exclusive perks; we wouldn't blame you if you never left your room. But when you do, be assured paradise is waiting.
