Best Jamaican Vacation yet!

This was our fourth trip to Jamaica but our first to Couples San Souci. We were there when Hurricane Matthew decided to make an appearance and the staff and General Manager, Mr. Battaglia were more than amazing. The communication to guests during this brief period was reassuring, concise and given often. Mr. Battaglia seems like a genuinely kind and compassionate person and this reflects on to the attitude of the staff as well. We were impressed by how he would stop by our table during breakfast to check on our well-being while we were waiting out Matthew's arrival. The staff compares to none. Everyone was friendly, polite and helpful. We couldn't have asked for more. The food was fantastic and we enjoyed the special drinks made by the bartenders. Maintenance staff kept the beautiful grounds and beaches spotless. Our room was always clean and the refrigerator well stocked. Special thanks to Daniel, Baby A, Coco Puff and Q. They became our family while we were there. We were awed by the beauty and grace of the resort. Many of the people we met were repeat guests to Couples Sans Souci and said they wouldn't try to fix something that wasn't broken. We, too, believe that this resort compares to none and have already booked our next trip. Many, many thanks to Mr. Battaglia and all of his staff for a job well done!

Another couple went with my boyfriend and I for a week to Couples San Souci. Our friends were celebrating their 1 year anniversary, and while we were there, my boyfriend (now fiancé!) proposed to me. This was our first Couples stay and first visit to Jamaica, so we weren't really sure what to expect. It was truly a fun, relaxing and memorable trip. Overall, the staff are extremely friendly. Something we noticed is that almost all employees will say "good morning/afternoon," "hello" or some kind of greeting often with a smile. It was nice and made us feel welcome. We really enjoyed the opportunities we had to speak 1:1 with locals and learn about daily life in Jamaica, the schools and government, the good and the bad. It provided interesting insight for us into their lives and culture. We noticed so many similarities to life here in America and also some differences. I want to highlight a few of the resort staff in particular. Omar is one of the staff photographers. He also played pool volleyball with us one afternoon. He was friendly and personable. Julia is a pool bartender (main pool). She gad a sweet personality but also enjoyed laughing and joking with us. She had a great memory, her service was prompt and the drinks were good. Alton is a driver who drove us to an offsite excursion. He was fantastic. He made the 1.5 hour drive each way feel so much shorter. We enjoyed talking to him, sharing about our lives and learning about his. We had many other good experiences with the staff, so these are just a few that really stood out to us. The guests are also pretty friendly. Everyone is there to have a good time and relax. We met some fun and nice couples during our pool volleyball games, excursions, etc. Since the resort isn't very large, you get used to seeing a lot of the same faces. You can easily make some new friends, or just keep to yourself and enjoy a romantic and private getaway. We stayed in building A with a view of the main beach and pool. Our room was spacious and renovated. The walk to the lobby/gift shop/game room/etc. from this area is up a steep hill though, so be aware of that. If you need a ride, you can phone the front desk. Our room was cleaned daily and we didn't notice any issues. The water pressure isn't fantastic, but it's adequate. The main beach is fairly small, but we knew that before going since we did our research. Since this resort only has 150 rooms, it never really got too crowded. There aren't many chairs at the beach and pool though, so if you want to get some, go out early in the day. The swimming area is also small and shallow so we mostly swam in the pool. Also, the beach swimming area has a lot of spots with grass/seaweed. Most people either sat in the water or used the floats to just relax. Let's talk about the food. There is one formal restaurant (Casanova), a more casual restaurant (Palazzina), and beach grill (Bella Vista). There aren't a ton of options like some larger resorts, but we felt it was just enough. We had breakfast most mornings at Palazzina. It was a buffet with many cold and hot options. We never left hungry, that's for sure. Most days we also ate lunch here, again it was a buffet. There was a theme - for example, one day it was Mexican inspired with tacos and fajitas. Another day it was Asian inspired. It was fun to have a variety of foods and there was something for everyone. We did have lunch one day at Bella Vista. This is served a la carte. The servings are somewhat small, but the food was good. You may want to order a couple items. We had dinner the night we got engaged at Casanova. It was lobster night, and that was delicious. Unfortunately, that was the only positive. The service was extremely slow and not great. What should have taken an hour took almost three. We were served salads with no dressing. It was impossible to get a drink refill. It took forever to get our orders in. We were there for 45 minutes before we even got to order our appetizers and meals. The restaurant was not busy, so I'm not sure what the excuse could have been. Needless to say, it was nice to have a "fancy" meal for our engagement dinner, but after that, we ate at Palazzina the remainder of the trip. I almost took away one star because of this experience, but the rest of the week was so fantastic, I am still giving five stars. We did have room service for dinner one night and breakfast two mornings. The meals arrived promptly and the food was good. We also loved that they stocked our mini fridge every morning. Very convenient. As far as excursions, we went to Dunn's River Falls. This was awesome! You literally climb up the falls but walking/climbing on rocks. You definitely need water or tennis shoes to protect your feet. This was one of our favorite experiences of the trip. Be aware though - the only way back to your vehicle is through a market. You WILL be approached repeatedly by people trying to sell their goods. They're all trying to make a living which we respected, and were very nice, but it was a little too pushy for us. It took away from the experience of the Falls in our opinion. However, I highly recommend this excursion. I think we would go back and would be more prepared next time knowing what to expect with the market. We also did snorkeling and went on the glass bottom boat. We did the boat first and I think it worked out well. If we snorkeled first, the boat would have been disappointing because you don't get to see as much. You do get to ride over a shipwreck which is pretty cool. Snorkeling was amazing though. We went through the reef and saw some pretty fish, including a puffer fish and some barracudas among other colorful tropical fish. You spend about 30 minutes in the water which seemed to be enough for most people. My fiancé and I love the water, so we could have stayed in longer. You have the option to try non-motorized water sports (first come, first serve). We kayaked and tried paddle boarding which was fun. There's also sailboats, windsurfing and paddle bikes. Tuesday night there was a beach party so this is how everyone had dinner. It was outside on the lawn at the main pool. There were Jamaican dishes and also dishes we were familiar with. Plenty of food and choices for everyone. There was a show after dinner with jugglers, break dancers, etc. A lot of fun. Overall, we really enjoyed our vacation. It has special meaning for us since we got engaged (we also saw many people on their honeymoons, anniversary trips, and even a couple weddings while we were there). We would definitely consider going back, but would also like to explore other places and resorts.

Hotel Description

Couples Sans Souci: Discover Fantastical Relaxation

It seems like there's never enough time to relax in the real world, so grab someone special, hop on a plane and head for the 35 beachfront acres of cliffside Couples San Souci for romantic walks along lush pathways, and then head to the two private coves, one for au-naturel sunbathers. The freedom to let go is what the spa is all about, which is why Travel + Leisure recently voted Couples San Souci as the number one spa hotel in the Caribbean!

The blue waters of the private coves are perfect for playing, and the curative mineral pool and hidden mineral grottos around the resort are real treasures for a refreshing and soul-awakening dip. Swim up to the pool bar for rum punch, or head to one of the five restaurants for stellar fare: the jerk chicken at the Beach Grill is out of this world and the stuffed shrimps at Casanova are delish. When the stars come out, Couples Sans Souci keeps the party going with a Tuesday-night Beach Party and Friday-night Starlight Gala for dinner, dancing and cultural entertainment.

Whether you want to play on the beach or just relax on it, the all inclusive options give you the freedom to spend your time how you want: sail, windsurf, water ski or scuba dive! The resort also offers excellent day excursions, so you can climb the waterfalls at Dunn's River Falls, have a drink at Margaritaville or gaze at the fishes on a glass-bottom boat tour. When you've had enough sun, the peppermint-sea-twist body treatment at the spa helps loosen sore muscles and is a great pick-me-up after a long day.

When it's time to turn out the lights, it's hard to go wrong with any of the rooms in the all-suite Couples Sans Souci. Relax and enjoy the spacious accommodations.
