1st Anniversary Trip - Beautiful and wonderful

This was my husband and I's first trip to the Dominican. We were very excited to spend our first anniversary in Punta Cana at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro and found it to be absolutely beautiful during our 7 day stay. ROOM: We booked the Junior Suite Superior, room 4421 which overlooked the Thalassa Pool where the swim up bar is located. We loved the location; very convenient for the front part of the resort but a walk if we wanted to venture to the beach or infinity pool. We found that if we wanted to go anywhere else to bring everything with us so we wouldn't be having to walk back and forth. Also, the fridge was restocked with waters and beer, we never touched the sodas. The snacks were only replenished once which was a bummer they didn't keep up on that consistency. Room service: awesome, never a disappointment. FOOD: We did many Thalassa breakfasts; loved the wood fire pizzas and the Sea Blue for lunch; for dinner we did the steakhouse where we had some surprisingly amazing steak, the hibachi which was also good, the Italian restaurant which was good in some ways, the Mediterranean restaurant where I wish we spent the evening somewhere else and the Cata Tapas which was incredible. In all, the food was pretty good. Some places were amazing and others were not worth the time. DRINKS: We were very satisfied with all bartenders and our drinks; no problem here :) **Highly recommend the Juice Bar in the beach: amazingly delicious!!** BEACH: Beautiful. I know some people except the crystal clear blue waters for miles out into the ocean and no you're not going to get it here but the beach was amazing and still breathtaking to us. White sands and majority of clear blue water with patches of darker water with seaweed. Perfect water temperature. We loved it. People are serving you drinks on the beach and they work hard at keeping the seaweed at a minimum. **one thing we didn't like too much was all of the soliciting on the beach from the locals trying to get your business** SPA: Unfortunately from other couples we talked to at the resort, we heard the massages were not the best. We tried the sauna and steam room: there was no steam to be had so we were finished rather quickly. We did workout in the gym, it is small but no biggie - we still got in a sweat and felt good afterwords :) ENTERTAINMENT: This is where I feel that the resort fell short. We are an active couple and loved that our past experience at an all inclusive had an awesome entertainment team and kept you in the know for what was going on. Here at the Catalonia, they did have daily activities such as dancing, Spanish classes, pool workouts, body balance and bingo, etc but if you didn't make it a point to venture out to see the day's activities you wouldn't know. They also were never on time, so when we would go to do an activity and show up 2 minutes early thinking they'd be getting started, no one would be there. Not much organization and the activities were so so, we ended up leaving in the middle of some of them because we would get bored. ADDITONAL: We truly loved our stay. We're easy people to please but we both agreed that 7 days was just a little too long for this resort. An excursion we took definitely helped break up the staleness of the resort because there was just not much to do during the day. As for the kid side of the resort, the theater was located there but we were never notified of what events were going on for us to prepare for. And yes, plastic wristbands are permitted to be worn through out your stay. There is a major language barrier between the workers and even the people staying who are fluent in Spanish. So it was difficult to form friendships with the staff or even ask for something that you needed. Again, a beautiful resort and we enjoyed our time but we look forward to broadening our all inclusive experiences and will probably try somewhere else or go back to our previous resort that really captured our hearts.

Don't Stay Here

The two big issues here and the awful service and that the rooms were very uncomfortable. The air conditioner didn't work well in our first room and I asked for someone to come and take a look. 4 hours later no one had so I called again. Waited another hour with no response so I called again. This time I also asked for an extra pillow and was told they were on their way. Another 30 mins, which was 11 pm by this time and no response still. I called yet again and was told that they had no extra pillows at all! This time someone did come about 30 mins later and took us to another room which was cooler. By the end of the week it had started to warm up again and our friends also had to switch rooms in the middle of the night because they were awoken due to the heat in the room. All four rooms we had were on the 3rd floor and had no assistance in moving our luggage down 3 floors and back up 3 floors. Besides the room itself, before check out I was told to call when we were ready and they would send someone to get us and our luggage. When I called at 4:50 am to meet our shuttle they said they had no bus boy and that we would have to bring our own luggage down and up to the lobby. I have been to the Dominican before and was very pleased with our experience at a different resort, but I will never return again after this.

Hotel Description

Catalonia Royal Bavaro (Adults-Only): Punta Cana is Where the Grown-Ups Go to Play

Escape to the all inclusive, adult-only Catalonia Royal Bavaro in Punta Cana, where the party's rollin', the Zen is flowin' and the kids are, well, absent. Thatched-roof palapas pepper the white sands along the resort's private stretch of one of the Caribbean's most famous beaches, Playa Bavaro. Grab a cocktail from the beach bar and wade in gloriously blue waters, or bask in the warm island sun next to one of the resort's two fabulous pools.

Beautifully bronzed and ready to take on the nightlife? Fuel up for your night of partying with delicious Mediterranean food from Thalasa, or indulge in yummy tapas from Cata Tapa. Resort guests enjoy not only all the facilities and amenities of Catalonia Royal Bavaro, but can also venture to the nearby sister resort, Catalonia Punta Cana for an additional nine restaurants and nine bars (just look out for the youngsters, as that resort is kid and family friendly).

When the morning comes round again and the sun-drenched beaches beckon, explore the tranquil waters of the bay by catamaran, or check out the bustling sea life of the Caribbean by snorkeling. Indulge your competitive side and hit the sands for a volleyball match, or grab a tee time at either of the two neighboring golf courses, The Cabeza de Toro Golf Club (nine-hole) and Caribe Golf Club (18-hole), are both designed by Alberto Sola. If your favorite activity is set to the soundtrack of rolling dice and shuffling cards, sidle up to one of the slot machines in Casino Punta Cana and test your luck.

For those whose activity schedule is gloriously out of commission, take a short stroll down to the stress-obliterating Alegria Spa for a heavenly session of pampering before heading back to the luxury of one of the resort's spacious suites, where you can laze the day away swinging in the hammock on your private balcony, grazing on room-service goodies and gazing out at the glittering turquoise sea.
