Poor Experience, But So Much Potential

Hello. My husband and I are in our 30s and we spend anywhere from 2-6 weeks a year in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico. We have a membership to another hotel chain but given that we were traveling last minute with our good friends, we decided to branch out and try somewhere new. I'll start with the positive: the food was very good for an all-inclusive resort. There are no buffets but the 3 restaurants are very impressive and offer a lot of variety. The rooms are very unique in design and layout - the floor to ceiling windows really make you feel like you are living in the jungle no matter which type of room you are in. All pictures of the rooms are 100% accurate - they are beautiful. The pool, while small, is very nice and there are plenty of cabanas and loungers. The beach is well maintained and the beach loungers are very high quality and comfortable - all you have to do is walk a little further down the beach to see the cheaper resorts with plastic beach furniture - yuck. Unfortunately we had one bad experience after another during our 3 night stay. The first bad sign was that we didn't have any hot water - nothing like traveling all day to have to take a cold shower. We called the front desk and they sent someone out to fix it, unfortunately "fixing it" meant that our room and our friend's room lost power and then phone service. Power came back up but our phones did not - normally this isn't a big deal but because the resort is so spread out, you have to be able to call for a golf cart to pick you up to get to the pool and restaurants - and of course the ability to call our friend's room. We let the concierge know that our phones were down but after 4 hours they were still broken and we still didn’t have hot water. We also asked if between our 2 rooms if there was a spare Nespresso maker we could use given that our rooms did not have them - we were even willing to pay - the concierge said they would check on it but we never heard back. The second day we reminded the concierge AGAIN that we had no phones and no hot water and they said it was a problem that was impacting 3-4 rooms and they were working on that morning. The 2nd night we had no phones, no hot water, and we hadn’t had turn down service (it was 8pm) so we had no bottled water - which is a problem in Mexico when you’ve been drinking all day - I called the front desk from my cell phone and asked to talk to a manager. They did bring bottled water right away and said that they had been trying to call us all day to tell us they wanted to upgrade our room…calling which phones I have no idea given that ours were not working and we had zero missed calls on our cell phones. The 3rd morning they upgraded us and our friends to new rooms - the ones that sit on the lagoon. We were super excited to have the Nespresso maker in the room but unfortunately the power outlet was busted so it was either have a working refrigerator or a working Nespresso maker. We had to call concierge twice to have them bring us ice (you have to call - cannot get it yourself). Which seems like a little thing but you know how it is when it’s been one frustrating things after another, the little things start to add up. The service overall was really lack luster. We definitely never expect to be waited on hand and foot but the one thing that normally shines at every all-inclusive resort is the service and professionalism - most of the time the employees seem to love their jobs and really enjoying helping the guests - definitely didn’t sense that here. The many issues with the rooms could have easily been overlooked with amazing service and response time, but sadly that wasn’t the case. They were not short staffed yet it seemed to take forever to get drinks and food and we saw a ton of staff standing around talking with each other. I ended up cancelling a massage because I was not feeling super well and concierge was sitting on the couch instead of at their desks and did not even stand up when I entered the room or try to have me reschedule, was very odd. There were, however, 2 rockstars that stood out - Luis and Ricardo - both SUPER WONDERFUL. Overall I think the Blue Diamond has SO MUCH POTENTIAL, but it needs a reboot. The rooms CAN be perfection - the service CAN be incredible. I will be keeping an eye on future reviews hoping that things change around because we really would love to give it a second chance. Cheers, AlwaysInMexico

Best Resort !!

I cannot begin to describe the amazing experience that my girlfriend and I had at this resort. Everything was perfect. We flew from NYC to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. First off, the service is EXCELLENT. We never heard the word no. The resort is beautiful. We felt like queens. Our suite was HUGE! We did not expect to have such a big room with great views. We stayed in the laguna suite, close to the beach. The food at Aguamarina whether it's lunch or dinner (didn't wake up early enough for breakfast), is delicious. We had dinner at the Ambar twice and it was great as well. I can't recommend the tostadas and tortilla soup enough, sooo good! We also got to meet cute coatis, monkeys, and an iguana. Friendly neighbors. Every day was wonderful and we can't wait to come back.

Blue Diamond Bliss

If you're into boutique luxury and have a penchant for style, Blue Diamond is your place. We were enchanted from the moment we entered the grand lobby and checked in. The staff are warm and welcoming. The decor is just right and nothing stands out as feeling cheesy or "all inclusive". This is the kind of resort you dream of. We especially loved the beach cruisers for getting around the property. This is a nice touch. We spent most of our time on the beach in the day beds or at the pool. The wildlife added a very special dimension to the experience as the spider monkeys were a lot of fun to feed and watch. The food was delicious and we felt there was a good selection overall. Some suggestions for visitors in summer months, make sure to take advantage of the mosquito spray which they provide as those guys can be relentless! Also, make sure to change your money before you get to the hotel because they charge a whopping 25% commission on currency exchanges at the hotel. We walked up and down the beach while we stayed there and from the looks of it, we definitely picked the best place in Playa Del Carmen. We highly recommend Blue Diamond for your Yucatan adventure!

Overall great trip & excellent service

Booked this trip last minute, about a week before our departure date and we still ended up getting a pretty good deal overall. (Sunday to Thursday stay over the 4th of July holiday.) The resort was pretty dead during our stay which ended up being great! We received excellent service from the staff throughout our entire trip. Food overall was pretty good, we tried a lot of dishes we has never had before which ultimately you'll always find things you don't like. Overall the food was well prepared and good. We appreciated the restaurant feel rather than buffet style all inclusive. There is only 1 dining place that is open for all day, and 2 others that are open after 12PM. There is 3 lounges with 1 being a cigar/hooka bar which was interesting and honestly we did not spend any time there. Pros - Beautiful & very comfortable rooms (ceiling fans/AC to keep you cool) - Service was excellent and staff was attentive our entire stay - Golf carts to drive you around the resort - Food was overall decent - Bartenders know their stuff! - Poolside entertainment pretty well every night - Private beach with lounging beds and plenty of chairs to lay out Cons - Room service costs $20 each day if you want food delivered to your room and the menu is a lot smaller than at the restaurants - Spa services are extremely overpriced, for the cost of 1 massage you could have done most excursions offered and for 2 people - Staff at excursion booth: could definitely have been more friendly and made recommendations rather than bashing excursions that they didn't like Overall it was a great trip! This resort is designed for leisure and relaxing. Adult-only so it is quiet and great if you are looking for quality time with a significant other. July is a bit of a tough time to be in this area due to the humidity and the mosquitoes! Definitely bring a ton of repellent and after-bite!!

Hotel Description

Blue Diamond: Resort Luxury, Riviera Maya Beauty, Complimentary Golf

Grab your clubs and sunscreen; the Mayan Riviera is calling! The all-inclusive Blue Diamond resort is nestled peacefully beside the teal and turquoise hues of the Caribbean surf and the baby-soft sands of Playa del Carmen. It's the kind of luxury that can only be found in a resort named to Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

If you've come down to stretch your swing, a great game of golf is always on tap at this posh, adult-only hideaway. Through a special arrangement with the resort, guests bask in the glow of complimentary greens fees at Grand Coral Golf Course Riviera Maya with 6,990 yards of tropical beauty and Nick Price-designed game play.

If you want to spend your time in the sand, an expansive white-gold beach affords guests a majestic chill-out atmosphere, where lush tropical foliage meets salt air and cool ocean breezes. Three on-site pools provide a sand-free location for waterside lounging or finding a thoughtful spot to read. A nearby bar satisfies any spontaneous beverage request you can dream up.

With four on-site restaurants to choose from, guests find scrumptious fare at every turn. Seafood doesn't get much fresher than at the beachfront Ceviche and Tapas Bar, and creatively fused International fare at Ambar is served overlooking the central lagoon. For some flavorful post-dining intake, try the rooftop Cigar Lounge, where you can find a world-famous assortment of stogies alongside an impressive list of wines and spirits. For a sweet, pastry-style nightcap, opt for Cafe Brule.

Live music plays every day at the Blue Diamond resort as a backdrop to a number of on-site activities such as Spanish lessons, wine tastings and the occasional table tennis competition. Take to the water on a kayak, or head to the resort's top-notch, full-service spa, which blends Mayan and Asian healing principles with full body massages, aromatherapy and facials. There are even classes for yoga, watsu and Pilates.

The Cenote Deluxe room, aptly named for its position right beside the resort's on-site cenote, sweetens the pot even further with a mini bar (restocked daily with premium liquors), a balcony or terrace, a daily array of tropical fruits and 24-hr room service. The Ribiera Junior Suite offers all of these amenities plus a plunge pool attached to the room's cozy terrace or balcony.
