This is my 2nd year in a row staying at the Bel Air. Last year I lucked into an incredible deal with a friend. This year I returned at regular prices because I wanted an easy, beautiful, last minute trip alone and the Bel Air has some specific things that I really love. I love white billowy curtains, champagne, beautiful food and the color of the Caribbean ocean. It is a small resort with no children running around the pool, no beach volleyball and no aqua aerobics. The infinity pool seems to flow seamlessly into the ocean. The lounge chairs at the pool and ocean are made of dense foam. There are large round baskets and canopied beds to lounge in by the pool. A waiter passes hors d' oeurves around midday. They serve tea in the courtyard in the evening and then sushi & martinis a little later. It's civilized, but not at all stuffy.
The place is hip, but not too hip. And it's casual.
Around 9pm, this time of year, huge sea turtles come up on shore and lay eggs. It's not unusual to see a dozen of them while taking a walk. On both my trips I saw newly hatched baby turtles. This year I was one of 30 people helping release 130 babies at night. An excited waiter came into the courtyard where I was eating my sushi & reading my book and gathered up anyone who wanted to take part.
I am a 50 year old woman with fairly diverse and extensive travel experience. I like this place because it's not huge and "Cancuny" feeling. It's easy (Cancun is easy to fly into, hotel is close to airport). I knew I wouldn't be bothered as a woman traveling alone. It has an ambiance that appeals to me. I've done the all inclusive plan on both trips.

Room Information
155 minimalistic, yet luxurious guestrooms offering a touch of elegance and spectacular views of the Mexican Caribbean or lush Lake Nichupte. All rooms are equipped with satellite TV and DVD players, coffee/tea makers, in-room safes and direct-dial phones. Bathrooms include showers, and luxurious bath amenities. Mini bars, air conditioning, and climate control are also included. A nightly turndown service is provided and housekeeping is offered daily. Some rooms have balconies.
Room service is available for an additional fee of $4 per person per service request (fee subject to change).
The resort really put a lot of care into its design; the color scheme, flowing white curtains and other chic d?cor choices create a cool, retro vibe.
What We'd Change
The age restrictions on kids may bum out families, but that same adults-only approach guarantees you'll find plenty of peace and serenity.

The aquamarine surf sparkles at the private beach of this Bel Air hotel in Cancun. Mexican sunshine warms up travelers from the frostiest places as they chill out on ultra-modern red and white loungers. If you're thirsty, swim up to the bar for a margarita at the infinity-edge pool, where the entire ocean looks like your personal playground. The Jacuzzi Bar brings new meaning to "poolside dining" with its tables and submerged chairs. Towel off and check out the three dining options: surf and turf combines the best of land and sea at Azur, and Dolce Mexico does the same for Italian and Mexican fare, fusing both cuisines into tantalizing dishes. It's 90 minutes to the Mayan ruins at Tulum and two hours to Chichen Itza, but if you're not up for the trip, Ruinas del Rey is just five minutes; take pictures from the top of Mayan plazas and investigate the Mayan engravings, glyphs and mural paintings.
