Best Resort in the Area - going back again!

This is our second trip to this resort and I have to say having visited St Lucia, the Dominican and taken numerous other trips this is the best resort by far! The resort is perfect for all ages, but if you're traveling with no kids there are pockets where you won't be interrupted by little ones. Resort grounds: The resort has clean, white beaches from which you can snorkel or swim out a few yards and feed turtles and fish by hand. There is a waterpark, mall and numerous pools and swim up bars. The grounds are always spotless and well maintained. I can't say enough about how beautiful the grounds are. The shows are great too. Staff: The entire staff is friendly, helpful and seem happy to have you there. I especially want to thank Evelio Gomez, Leonardo (Jacel) Ficachi and Alejandro from the Palenque Theatre bars - they met us each night with smiles and wonderful attitudes, making us feel both welcome and well served. Their knowledge of drinks and shots was very impressive. Definitely go see them. Rooms: Rooms are very clean, but nothing fancy. Maids worked hard to ensure our room was well maintained the entire time we were there. Work hard to get a room near the beach. The good and bad of the resort is that it is huge. Restaurants: if you are not staying at the Palace you have to pay the $20 to go to the French restaurant - DO IT!!! It is beautiful and Fernando and Oscar will make you feel like you are eating in a 5 star restaurant. The other restaurants, especially the Italian one are also wonderful. The buffet was not as good as our last visit, but was still clean and well stocked. Recommend booking your restaurants as soon as you arrive Rooms: we stayed in the Guatajuala which is central to all things. I think it is the best locale. Activities - only negative to the place are the lack of daily activities. They need to adopt the cruise line activity model, to liven the place up during the day - outside of exercise activities there isn't much to do. Things to bring: blow up rafts, hats, water shoes and Yeti type cups. Wifi available for a fee. Transfers - utilize Amstar to get to hotel. Other companies will be very pushy in the airport, attempting to trick you into using them, stating they represent Amstar. Ignore them, go outside of the airport and Amstar will take care of the rest. Overall I couldn't recommend this place more highly. We intend to go back next year as do almost all the people we met.

Not bad but not great

This was our first trip with our kids and I'm glad we went here. I say this because I would not recommend this resort if you are going as a couple without children. The pools are clean and the beach is nice (raked every day and no sea weed on our trip). In the water at the beach is very rocky!!!! There very little sand before you get to rocks. The rooms are nice but extremely limited outlets so don't plan on plugging in multiple items. Don't expect to have your water and mini-fridge restocked every day. We had to call every single day we were there to get more bottled water, juice and "other drinks". The resort was prompt in getting those things to us when asked but will not restock them when they clean your room. Don't try to iron a shirt and have your wife blow dry her hair becasue your will blow a fuse and it'll take a half an hour for someone to come and reset it. The food is ok and the buffet get very boring. Reservations are very hard to get so try to pick out a couple places when you are checking in. Don't bother with the upgrade they pitch you at check in either NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. Lastly the ocean front rooms are not ocean front. they are behind the pool and or pool bar. They are more like limited ocean view rooms.

Elsewhere would be better deal

Cheap Caribbean agent redirected me here from another advertised resort I requested - said beach here less rocky. It was VERY rocky - we had to buy water shoes just to walk into surf. Even with shoes worried about twisting ankle. Bed hard, pillows too huge - will crink your neck. Buffets terrible - we got sick on either the food or water - we never left the premises. Not "allowed" to dine at a la carte restaurants at will - we stayed 4 nights - had "passes" for 2 nights. Tokyo Steakhouse in mall - VERY GOOD experience. The seafood restaurant is misrepresented in pictures. The prawns are only 21-30 count regular shrimp and the lobster is NOT succulent Maine lobster, no claws, just a few bites of barely OK lobster. We DID like the pool layout outside the Tropical. However, there are no drink lists at the pool so difficult to know how a drink is prepared. The white wine is warm at EVERY bar and in the restaurants - not sure what the wine is since you can only order WHITE not chardonney, pinot grigio,etc.. Facility transportation (on grounds only) insufficient and the double-decker bus is not air conditioned. Sit on top level if you take the bus, the moving air outside is better than stifling fan inside. You see no wildlife on premises except occasional iguana. Hear a few birds. The refrigerator restocking guy (2 different days) knocked on door, but didn't wait for answer nor for me to open door - if I or a young child had been undressed in the room I would have been VERY angry. My husband wouldn't let me complain at the desk. Stayed similar all-inclusive resorts for similar price - don't consider this a good value compared to those faciities

What's to Love

A tropical rainforest surrounds the resort with over a mile of a private, white sandy beach.

Resort is mega-sized of fun - you have access to Barcelo Maya Beach and Barcelo Maya Caribe.

The swim-up bars at the pools will likely be your favorite go-to bars during the day.

Lively entertainment at night - theatrical shows and live music keep the party going.

Activities like an 18-hole mini golf, 4-lane bowling alley and video games at Strikers.

What We'd Change

The 40-minute trek from the airport is a bit much, but the pools, kid's club and water park for kids up to age 12 more than make up for it.

Why You Should Go

Located in Riviera Maya, you're just forty miles from the airport. A fruity cocktail awaits you.

Pack your water shoes - so many bright colored fish and turtles to see in the ocean.

The fitness center is modern and updated with the latest equipment.

The Dolphinarium is just off the beach and includes acrobatics + dolphins.

You can take a public shuttle to Tulum, Akumal or Playa del Carmen - it's cheap & fun exploring.
