Description

Barbuda, Antigua's smaller sister island of 68 miles, lies 25 miles north of Antigua and is wild, woolly and barely inhabited. Most visitors arrive by propeller plane from Antigua at tiny Codrington Airstrip, which consists of one tiny cement block structure - the alleged terminal building - and a short runway. There are daily 20-minute flights between Antigua and Codrington Airport in Barbuda. You may also choose to arrive by boat or a chartered yacht. Don't expect a quick trip - Barbuda is 4 to 5 hours away by a small yacht or boat. It is a nice and relaxing journey, however with breathtaking views of the Caribbean and its scenery.

About 1,000 inhabitants reside in Codrington, and beyond town are beautiful stretches of uninhabited beach accessed by rutted roads surrounded by scrub brush and cacti. The most popular attraction here is actually offshore - the Frigate Bird Sanctuary. Bereft of visitor-friendly signs and amenities, this mangrove swamp is accessed by boat and is aflutter with majestic frigate birds. The tiny Barbuda has neither public transportation nor an established taxi service, but you might be able to arrange to hire someone to drive you around. Vehicle rental is another option, although the individuals who rent out vehicles change from time to time and tracking them down can be tricky.

Local Information

The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar but US dollars are accepted throughout the island. The official language of Barbuda is English. Electricity is mostly 220 but a few hotels have 110. As far as driving, you will need a valid Antiguan driver's licence available at Antigua's V.C. Bird Airport and remember to stay on the left side of the road when in your car.

Airport Information

To get to Barbuda you fly into Codrington Airport (BBQ). LIAT and various charters make the 15-minute flights daily from Antiqua's V.C. Bird Airport. A second private airstrip is located at Coco Point Lodge. Please be advised that many destinations charge a departure fee. Generally, most airlines include this fee in the cost of your airline ticket. We recommend you contact the airline directly to review the details with the carrier.

Entry Requirements

Effective December 31, 2006, the U.S. Department of State and Homeland Security requires all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality. This information should be used only as a guideline and non-U.S. citizens should contact the airline they are traveling on, or their local consulate regarding the specific entry requirements that apply to their nationality.
