Description Laying at the southern edge of the Caribbean, Trinidad is ideal for the traveler with more than just fun-in-the-sun on their agenda. Although its largely unpublicized beaches are considered one of the islands' best kept secrets, Trinidad's identity is sophisticated, exciting and very cosmopolitan.
Trinidad's terrain is equally as diverse, ranging from lush mountains, healthy rainforests, rolling plains and deserted swampland. Its cities are among the most chic metropolises in the Caribbean. Its reputation as a center for trade and commerce has kept tourism at an arm's length until recently, a definite plus for the traveler weary of crowded beaches. The island plays host to constant festivals and events, featuring music, more music, and of course, food.
From bird sanctuaries to the Caroni Swamp, Trinidad gives visitors an incredible land adventure. The empty beaches and sprawling landscape seem to contradict the lively nightlife and world renown shopping of the island. The island's main attraction is the Carnival of Trinidad, the Caribbean's largest music, dance and food celebration. The people of this English-speaking island spend the better part of the year preparing lavish costumes and floats for Carnival which happens every February.
Local Information The currency is the Trinidad & Tobago Dollar (TT$). Credit Cards are widely accepted. The official language is English. The current on the island is either 110 or 220 volts; Ask your hotel which they use, although packing an adapter is a smart idea. Driving is on the left, and foreign or international driver's license is required for car rentals. If you stay in the outlying areas, a car or scooter might be necessary for reliable local travel. Taxis are prevalent on the island. Local buses are an inexpensive alternative but they are crowded and run down. The ferry between Trinidad and Tobago is about a 4 1/2 hour trip by boat or via air with BWIA or Air Caribbean.
Airport
Information The Piarco International Airport, in Port of Spain (POS) is served by Air Canada, Air Caribbean, American Airlines, American Eagle, BWIA, Carib Express and LIAT. Each traveller is required to pay departure tax of US $16 at the airport upon leaving the island.
Entry
Requirements Effective December 31, 2006, the U.S. Department of State and Homeland Security requires all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality.
