Description Margarita Island, just off the coast of Venezuela, is perhaps little known on the international tourism scene, which has thankfully spared it some of the resort megaprojects so endemic to highly developed tourist destinations. It snuggles against the northern South American Continent thereby escaping hurricanes and variations in weather and enjoying consistently warm temperatures.
The island is recognized throughout the world for excellent windsurfing as the wind never stops blowing. Oceanic beaches such as El Agua, Parguito, and Guacuco, are home to many resorts, restaurants, and nightclubs as well as incredible waves.
Margarita Island emerges out of the warm water in the Caribbean Sea, with beautiful beaches, mountains, valleys and deserts. It has an average annual temperature of 85 F. Together with Coche and Cubagua Islands, it forms the State of Nueva Esparta. This group of islands have a similar geological construction and are located at 45 miles from the north-east coast of Venezuela.
Local Information The official language of Margarita Island is Spanish. However, English is widely spoken. The official currency is the Bolívar. Nevertheless, US$ are widely accepted in the commercial establishments, as well as traveler checks and credit cards. Almost any foreign currency is negotiable in banks or exchange house, as well as hotels. In Margarita like mainland Venezuela, the electric current is 110 volts AC. The public transportation systems in Margarita will take you around the island, but if you are in a hurry it is better to choose another alternative, such as a rental car.
