  Description
The Bahamas, consisting of over 700 islands and cays with friendly people, beautiful beaches, and magnificent dive spots, offer everything from eco-tourism adventures and parasailing to casino gaming and top-notch shopping. Besides the bustling Nassau (New Providence Island), Freeport (Grand Bahama Island) and Paradise Island - there are many other less frequented destinations that are a part of the islands of the Bahamas.

Andros is the largest and least-explored island in The Islands Of The Bahamas, offering a wide variety of activities for just about everyone. This 2,300-square-mile island paradise is not only known as the bonefishing capital of the world, but also boasts the second-largest reef in the Northern Hemisphere and is home to the oldest dive resort on the planet. Whether diving or snorkelling, the average year-round 80°F temperature of the crystal clear, blue waters makes discovering the abundant marine wildlife surrounding Andros Island a magical treat you'll never forget.

The Abaco Islands are a sailing and boating universe. The major islands of this small archipelago are Great and Little Abaco, with the off-lying cays of Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Guana Cay, Stranger's Cay, Umbrella Cay and Walker's Cay completing the string. Somewhere in this 120-mile necklace of islands and often uninhabited cays and beaches, you?re sure to find the ideal private spot for some chilled champagne and a good book.

Miles of glistening pink and white sand beaches, serene colonial villages and rolling acres of pineapple plantations make Eleuthera Island an island of the most casual sophistication. The cool laziness of Eleutheran life and dusty-yet-drenched colours of the island give it the feel of a giant illusion. Much of the island's architecture and way of life were influenced by Loyalist settlers in the late 1700s. With its two companions, Harbour Island and the community of Spanish Wells, Eleuthera Island has long been a favoured destination among smart travellers seeking a bit of quiet charm.

The Bimini Islands are the closest of The Islands Of The Bahamas to the coast of Florida (you can see the glow of Miami Beach at night) and this has made The Bimini Islands a popular destination for American visitors. But it?s more than just location that makes it a hot attraction. The waters surrounding The Bimini Islands are known the world over for top big-game fishing. From spring to fall -- fishing tournaments reign supreme almost every weekend. Of course, as with any Bahamian island, relaxing on a sun-soaked beach is always a favourite activity.

The Exuma Islands are located in the middle of The Islands Of The Bahamas, yet remain mostly undisturbed. The Exuma Islands are a collection of some 365 cays and islands stretching over 120 miles, supported at the southern end by two main islands, Great Exuma and Little Exuma. The main attractions for visitors are its world-class sportfishing and boating. The miles of picturesque islands, cays and hidden coves make for some of the most spectacular sailing in The Islands Of The Bahamas, both for recreational sloops and competitive yachting alike. Snorkellers will find the wide, shallow coastal region teeming with life and easy to explore, while divers can explore the huge coral reef or Exuma Sound which is filled with caves, blue holes and shipwrecks.

How adventuresome do you want your visit to The Islands Of The Bahamas to be? If you?re looking for total escape from the crowds, something different from the everyday and a full menu of the unexpected, you might want to become "a collector" of the extraordinary Out Islands. You can find every activity from just doing nothing at all to exploring some of the world?s most spectacular dive sites. From a quiet afternoon kicking back in your shaded hammock to experiencing the shrill song and electrifying excitement of a saltwater reel playing out what seems to be miles of line before the drag slows your determined, deep-sea competitor. Just about everything you can find on the larger islands, you can also find on Acklins/Crooked Island, The Berry Islands, Cat Island, The Inagua Islands, Long Island, Mayaguana Island or San Salvador Island. You just won?t have as many witnesses.

Local Information
The local currency is the Bahamian dollar (B$1), which is equivalent in value to the US dollar. Both US and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably throughout the islands. The official language of The Bahamas is English, more British than American, and generally intertwined with a special Bahamian dialect. Electricity is normally 120 volts AC. and is compatible with most US appliances, however UK appliances will need an adapter. As far as driving, British rules apply, so please drive on the left and watch those roundabouts! Visitors may use their home licenses for up to three months and may also apply for an international driver's license. Pedestrians should remember to look carefully both ways before crossing streets. Eastern Standard Time is used within The Islands of The Bahama. April to October is Eastern Daylight Time, in conjunction with US summer hours.

Airport Information
To get to the Bahamas you would fly into The Freeport International Airport (FPO-located on Grand Bahama Island), Nassau International Airport (NAS-located on New Providence Island) or you can fly into one of the other islands (Abaco, Exuma, Bimini). There are ten to fifteen flights per day from southern Florida to airports on The Abaco Islands. Flights from Miami and Nassau depart daily for George Town on The Exuma Islands. And both scheduled seaplane and regular charter service are available for travel from Florida and from other islands, nonstop to The Bimini Islands. Each person leaving Bahamas must pay $15 departure tax. Children under 6 years old are exempted.

Entry Requirements
Effective December 31, 2006, the U.S. Department of State and Homeland Security requires all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality. This information should be used only as a guideline and non-U.S. citizens should contact the airline they are traveling on, or their local consulate regarding the specific entry requirements that apply to their nationality.
